Positive Discipline

Principal’s Message:

Thank you to Lysa Tabachnick and Kim Woodland who are the facilitator of Monarch’s Positive Discipline training series. Our trainings for this year are completed. You can find a Zoom code on the calendar page of this website. This past Saturday we addressed issues including:

  1. Recognizing and communicating when you have “flipped” your lid
  2. Using Curiosity Questions to support children’s problem-solving skills
  3. Making Connections before Offering Correction
  4. Making Agreements
  5. Offering limited choices
  6. Reflecting children’s experiences/emotions and stating the agreement, situation or need
  7. Inviting Cooperation, not Compliance

Kim shared a lovely poem by William Martin from The Parent’s Tao Te Ching:

Lead by Example

If you want your children to follow

Along a certain path,

You must lead the way the ocean

Leads a river home

By remaining below it.

If you don’t have it already, please get a copy of the book entitled Positive Discipline, the guide for parents and teachers to help children develop self-discipline, responsibility, cooperation, and problem-solving skills. Copies are available by donation from the Monarch office ([email protected]), through your local bookstore, or in the BSSC library for loan.

Positive Discipline Parent Support Group:

Monarch is a community that is deeply committed to the philosophy of Positive Discipline. Positive Discipline is the philosophical basis upon which all interactions at Monarch occur, and it is therefore important all adults have access to Positive Discipline training and support. The Monarch Community Board has decided to offer optional Positive Discipline Parent Support Groups on the last Monday evening of every month. We have engaged the fabulous Colleen Murphy, through Positive Discipline Community Resources, as our facilitator. Colleen is a longtime friend and advocate for Monarch families, and is very committed to our community. These monthly meetings will be opportunities to troubleshoot with her about how to hold all of the crazy stuff that is coming up in our families as we attempt to support our kids. Please join us!
